The article is a follow-up of Cristian Fernandez's story. Fernandez was pleaded guilty in February 2013 regarding the death of his two year old stepbrother in March 2011. He was tried as an adult and would’ve been sentenced life in prison without parole. As a child, Fernandez was neglected and sexually abused, assaulted. As a result, he became emotionally unstable which could’ve very well lead to the murder of his step-brother. The article describes advocate’s experience as they hope to help rehabilitate Cristian Fernandez with psychosexual therapy and not with the life in prison punishment that was originally considered. It is clear to see that this article outlines an example of youth incarceration and how USA’s jailing policies do not work in favour of these instances. If Fernandez was to be condemned to death in prison, he would’ve never had a second chance. Though the therapy and mental help came later than it should’ve, it’s still better than what some other youths are facing today with the extent of punishment policies allow. The article does not contain any clear bias, as it consists mostly of direct quotes from involved parties. In summary, Fernandez’s case is a good example to portray how out of balance the US’s incarceration policies are, and how dire a reformation is needed.
